How to Play Yahtzee
What is Yahtzee?
Yahtzee is a beloved dice game that has entertained families and friends for over 70 years. Originally created in the 1950s by Edwin S. Lowe, Yahtzee combines the excitement of dice rolling with strategic decision-making. The game's name comes from the term "yacht" - sailors used to play a similar game during long voyages.
At its core, Yahtzee is about probability, risk assessment, and timing. Players must decide which dice to keep, which to re-roll, and most importantly, which scoring categories to fill based on their current dice combination. This creates engaging gameplay where every decision matters.
How Does Yahtzee Work?
Yahtzee works on a simple yet engaging turn-based system:
đ˛ The Rolling Phase
Each turn begins with rolling all five dice. You can then choose which dice to keep and which to re-roll. You get up to three total rolls per turn, giving you two chances to improve your initial roll.
đ The Scoring Phase
After your rolls, you must choose one category on your scorecard to fill. Each category can only be used once per game, so timing is crucial. You might score big points or sometimes take a strategic zero.
đ The Strategy Element
The key to Yahtzee is balancing risk and reward. Do you go for a high-scoring Yahtzee or play it safe with a guaranteed Full House? Should you work toward the upper section bonus or focus on lower section combinations?
- Objective: Score the most points by rolling five dice to make specific combinations across 13 categories.
- Turns: Each turn allows up to 3 dice rolls. After each roll, choose which dice to keep and which to re-roll.
- Scoring: After your rolls, choose one unused category to score. Each category can only be used once per game.
- Upper Section: Score by adding dice showing 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, or 6s. Get 63+ points for a 35-point bonus.
- Lower Section: Score special combinations like Full House (25 pts), Straights (30/40 pts), and Yahtzee (50 pts).
- Yahtzee Bonus: Additional Yahtzees after the first score 100 bonus points and can act as "Jokers".

STRATEGY TIPS
Focus on the upper section bonus early - it's worth 35 points! Go for Yahtzees when you have 3-4 of a kind. Use the Chance category for high-value rolls that don't fit elsewhere. Remember: you must fill all 13 categories, so sometimes taking a zero is strategic!
Advanced Strategies:
- Early Game: Prioritize upper section categories with high-value dice (4s, 5s, 6s)
- Mid Game: Assess your bonus potential and adjust accordingly
- Late Game: Use Chance and "of a Kind" categories for high dice totals
- Yahtzee Hunting: When you have 3+ of a kind, consider going for Yahtzee if you have enough turns left
