Hollywood Gin - Triple-Game Scoring
About Hollywood Gin
Hollywood Gin adds exciting depth to classic Gin Rummy with its unique triple-game scoring system. Instead of playing single games to 100, you're playing three games simultaneously on one scoresheet! See the Hollywood Gin win rate for realistic expectations.
Named after its popularity among Hollywood stars in the 1930s-40s, this variant extends play sessions and rewards consistent performance across multiple games.
Hollywood Scoring Rules
The Three-Game System
Hollywood Gin tracks three games at once. Here's how scoring works:
- First Win: Opens Game 1 - points go to Game 1 only
- Second Win: Opens Game 2 - points go to Games 1 & 2
- Third Win+: Points go to all three active games
Winning the Match
The first player to reach 100 points in all three games wins the Hollywood match. Each individual game completing at 100+ is called "closing" that game.
Example
If you win your first hand with 32 points, only Game 1 shows 32. Win again with 28 points, and now Game 1 shows 60, Game 2 shows 28. Your third win of 45 points adds to all three: Game 1: 105 (closed!), Game 2: 73, Game 3: 45.
Strategy Tips
Build Momentum
Early wins are crucial in Hollywood Gin. Getting to your third win quickly means every subsequent win contributes to all three games, accelerating your path to victory.
Defensive Play
Don't let your opponent reach their third win first. Even losing a hand by fewer points is better than giving them a chance to triple-score.
Close Games Strategically
Focus on closing one game at a time. Once a game reaches 100, those points no longer add to it, so the opponent can't catch up in that game.
Hollywood Gin History
Hollywood Gin emerged during the Golden Age of Hollywood when studio executives, actors, and writers played between takes and during long production days. The three-game format meant longer, more strategic sessions—perfect for downtime on set.
The variant was so popular that "playing Hollywood style" became synonymous with the triple-game format in card rooms across America.
