Continental Rummy

Continental Rummy is a progressive contract rummy game. This version follows the Wikipedia layout for the seven hands: every player receives 12 cards, draws one, discards one, and tries to open the exact contract for the current hand.

The Seven Contracts

The contract ladder is two trios, one trio and one straight, two straights, three trios, two trios and one straight, two straights and one trio, then three straights. A trio is a set of three or more cards of the same rank. A straight is a run of four or more suited cards.

Wild Cards

Jokers and red aces are wild. Wild cards can fill missing cards in a set or straight, but they should not outnumber natural cards in a meld. Holding a joker is powerful, but it is expensive if the hand ends before you use it.

Turn Flow

Draw from stock or take the top discard, then open if you can satisfy the current contract. Once open, use the discard button to end the turn. The opponent uses the same contract and tries to reduce deadwood before the hand ends.

Scoring

Continental Rummy is a low-score game. Cards from 2 through 9 count 5 points, tens and face cards count 10, aces count 20, and jokers count 50. After seven hands, the lower total wins.

Strategy Tips

Respect the current hand. A strong set-heavy hand can be useless on a straight-heavy contract, so use the discard pile only when it directly helps the contract. Red aces are flexible, but saving too many wilds can backfire because every unused wild card is a large penalty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cards are dealt in Continental Rummy?

Each player receives 12 cards for every hand. The contract changes each hand, but the hand size stays fixed.

What is the difference between a trio and a straight?

A trio is three or more cards with the same rank. A straight is four or more consecutive cards in the same suit.

Why are red aces special?

In the Wikipedia rules used here, jokers and red aces are wild. Black aces are natural cards and score as aces if left in hand.
