Six hands. Six ways to avoid trouble. Follow suit, dodge penalty cards and finish with the lowest score.

    How to play Canadian Salad

You and three computer opponents each receive 13 cards. Play one card each to a trick. You must follow the first card's suit if you can. Otherwise, play any card. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick and leads next. Aces are high, and there are no trumps.

    The six hands

    1. No tricks: each trick costs 10 points.
    2. No hearts: each heart captured costs 10 points.
    3. No queens: each queen captured costs 25 points.
    4. No king of spades: capturing the king of spades costs 100 points.
    5. No last trick: taking trick 13 costs 100 points.
    6. Everything counts: all five penalties apply together.

    Winning and ties

The lowest combined penalty score after six hands wins. Equal lowest scores share the win. The score beside your portrait is your match total plus penalties already taken in the current hand.

    Plan around the current hand

A queen is dangerous in hand three, but harmless by itself in hand five. Watch the current contract before choosing which cards to keep. You may lead hearts without waiting for them to be broken.
