500 Rummy (Rummy 500) - Play Free Online

About 500 Rummy

500 Rummy — also known as Rummy 500, 500 Rum, Pinochle Rummy, Michigan Rummy, and Persian Rummy — is one of the most popular Rummy variants worldwide. Unlike Gin Rummy, where you score against your opponent's deadwood, in 500 Rummy you score points FOR your melds!

The goal is simple: be the first player to reach 500 points across multiple rounds by melding cards to the table.

How to Play 500 Rummy

Setup

Each player receives 7 cards. The remaining cards form the stock pile, with one card turned face-up to start the discard pile.

Turn Structure

On your turn, you must:

  1. Draw: Take from the stock OR pick any card from the discard pile (you must take all cards above your chosen card)
  2. Meld: Optionally play sets (3-4 of a kind) or runs (3+ consecutive same suit) to the table
  3. Lay Off: Optionally add cards to ANY meld on the table
  4. Discard: Place one card face-up on the discard pile

Going Out

When a player has no cards left, the round ends. That player goes out.

Card Values and Scoring

Card Point Values

  • Ace (in A-2-3): 1 point
  • Ace (in Q-K-A or sets): 15 points
  • 2 through 9: Face value
  • 10, J, Q, K: 10 points each

Scoring Summary

  • Meld points are added to your score
  • Deadwood (cards left in hand) is subtracted
  • It's possible to have a negative round!
  • First to 500 points wins the game

Strategy Tips

Meld Early, Meld Often

Unlike Gin Rummy, there's no penalty for melding early. Get those points on the board!

Watch the Discard Pile

Taking from deep in the discard pile gives you more cards - but you must use the card you're targeting. Make sure it's worth the extra deadwood risk.

Ace Flexibility

Aces are valuable in high runs (Q-K-A = 35 points!) but risky as deadwood (15 points against you).

Go Out Strategically

Sometimes it's better to wait and meld more. Catch your opponent with a big hand!
