  3. Compare Poker handsThe best five-card poker hand in each full hand competes for the Poker tray.

  5. Empty your hand firstCollect the Michigan tray and one token for every card left with an opponent.

Michigan Rummy Rules, Demonstrated

Replay each short example to see how pay cards, Poker, upward sequences, and stopped suits work at this table.

Rule 1

Settle pay cards from the dealt hands

Pay-card trays are checked before Poker. A player holding both the Queen and King of Hearts collects the combination tray as well as the two individual heart trays.

PairQ♥ + K♥ wins the QH + KH tray.
Rule 2

Compare the best five-card Poker hand

The strongest five-card Poker hand wins the Poker tray. That player also leads the first card in the Michigan sequence.

Rule 3

Play the next rank in the same suit

Lead your lowest available card. Once a suit starts, play its next rank whenever that card is available: 6 of Hearts, then 7 of Hearts, then 8 of Hearts.

Rule 4

Choose a new low card after a stop

If the required next card is sealed in the kitty, the sequence stops. The player who laid the last card may lead their lowest available card in any suit.

Nine prizes

Michigan Rummy Pay Cards and Trays

Seven prizes are decided by cards in the deal, one by Poker, and one by sequence play. If a qualifying card is in the sealed kitty, its tray remains untouched and grows after the next ante.

How each Michigan Rummy tray is won
10H, JH, QH, KH, AHThe player holding that heart collects its tray.
QH + KHOne hand must hold both the queen and king of hearts.
8-9-10One hand must hold an 8, 9, and 10 in the same suit.
PokerThe strongest five-card poker hand collects this tray.
MichiganThe first player to empty their hand collects the final tray.
Play in sequence

How the Michigan Sequence Works

The Poker winner leads the lowest card they hold in any suit. The next higher card in that suit must then be played by whoever holds it. The sequence continues until it reaches an ace or the next card is sealed in the kitty.

  • Choose a legal lead: select the lowest card you hold in any suit.
  • Follow the forced rank: the highlighted card is the only legal play during a sequence.
  • Take over after a stop: whoever played the final card chooses the next suit to lead.
  • Go out first: empty your hand to win the tray and collect opponent card payments.

The Quick Browser Variation

This version uses four players, a 52-card deck, nine labeled trays, a sealed kitty, and three deals per match. Tied prizes split evenly, with any leftover token staying in its tray.

The computer handles antes, pay-card checks, Poker comparison, forced sequence cards, and payouts. You decide which suit to lead whenever several legal cards are highlighted.

After deal three, a fresh five-card Poker showdown awards every token still sitting in an unclaimed tray before the largest purse determines the match winner.

Play with purpose

Michigan Rummy Strategy

  • Build a private run: prefer a lead that lets you release several consecutive cards.
  • Remember the gaps: a missing rank can stop the same suit again later.
  • Unload isolated low cards: lead them while you still control the table.
  • Count opponent cards: a fast finish can earn more than a perfect-looking sequence.
Common questions

Michigan Rummy Questions

Is Michigan Rummy the same as Tripoley?

They belong to the same game family and share pay-card, Poker, and sequence stages. Board labels and house rules can differ.

What is the kitty?

The kitty is a face-down extra hand that nobody plays. Its hidden cards create sequence stops and can leave trays unclaimed.

Can I choose any card when I lead?

No. You choose the lowest card you hold in any suit. Every legal choice lifts and glows.

What happens to an unclaimed tray?

Its tokens carry over, then the next deal adds another ante.

How is the match winner decided?

After three deals, the player with the largest token purse wins.
