Eight Off Solitaire - The Original FreeCell

Eight Off is the precursor to FreeCell and inspired many modern patience games. With 8 free cells for temporary storage but stricter suit-building rules, it offers a unique strategic challenge.

How to Play Eight Off

Move all 52 cards to the four foundations, building each suit from Ace to King. Use eight free cells as buffers and eight tableau columns that build down by suit.

  • Free cells: Eight cells for temporary single-card storage. Four start filled.
  • Foundations: Build up by suit, Ace to King.
  • Tableau: Build down by the same suit only. Only Kings can fill empty columns.

Supermove: Moving Multiple Cards

Multi-card moves follow the FreeCell supermove formula: (Empty Cells + 1) × 2Empty Columns. With 8 cells, you can move longer runs when you keep cells empty.

Strategy Tips

  • Four cells start filled, so plan early moves to free them up.
  • Empty columns are powerful but only Kings can use them.
  • Preserve suit sequences rather than breaking them for short-term gains.
  • Advance all four foundations evenly to avoid trapping low cards.
