What is Straight Gin?
Straight Gin is a challenging variant of Gin Rummy where knocking is not allowed. To end a round, you must achieve Gin - meaning all 10 of your cards form valid melds (sets or runs) with exactly 0 deadwood.
How is Straight Gin Different from Regular Gin Rummy?
In standard Gin Rummy, you can "knock" when your deadwood is 10 points or less. In Straight Gin, this option is removed entirely:
- No knocking – The knock button is disabled
- Only Gin wins – You need 0 deadwood to end the round
- Longer games – Rounds typically take more turns
- No undercuts – Since you can't knock, undercuts don't exist
Straight Gin Scoring
Scoring is simpler than regular Gin Rummy since every round ends with Gin:
- Gin bonus: 25 points
- Opponent's deadwood: Added to your score
- Game ends: First to 100 points wins
Strategy Tips for Straight Gin
- Build flexible melds: Focus on cards that can work in multiple combinations
- Track discards carefully: Knowing unavailable cards is crucial
- Be patient: Games take longer, so plan ahead
- Middle cards are gold: 5-9 cards connect more easily in runs
